Recycling in Malaysia

When I was studying in the UK, recycling was made very convenient. Each houses would have 2 coloured bins: green and blue for the normal waste and recyclable items.  All we had to do was throw the rubbish in the right bin and it will be collected twice a week.

But now that I am back in Malaysia, its obviously not the same anymore. We do very little recycling here, if i’m not mistaken around 10℅ recycling rate.

So, when I started renting at a place in KL, my bestfriend and I made this effort to collect all recyclable items we used and also from our housemates and then send it to a recycling center. We sent them to the one in IKANO, Kota Damansara. We have been doing this for 2 months already and we went there once every month and it was so satisfying. We collected around 3 super big plastic bags filled with plastic bottles and of course some boxes and papers every month. Imagine if every house in MALAYSIA do it. We could really reuse and recycle lots of them.

However I understand that this is only applicable in big cities here though. I don’t think people do recycling in rural areas like where my parents live although it is actually not that far from the capital city 🤔

So, what am I trying to say here?

1) Please do some recycling if you can, it’s good for our Mother Nature. Just google where you can send all these items to or look around your area or the areas you always go to.

2) It doesn’t have to be big. Start small. Start from recyclable items in your rooms, your house.

I think that is all for now. Go Green!

Love, Qien 🙂
